Or is it artwork?
Coming back to everyday life and the geology I originally set this blog up to write about: This amazing specimen is at Oxford University Museum of Natural History (@morethanadodo on social media). I'd seen this type of slab before, but as befits such an august institution, the one on display there is spectacular.
It's clearly not an animal! It's not a fossilised vegetable, either, nor a very detailed artwork. It's mineral. It's dendrites - tree-like patterns - of of manganese minerals that percolated between the bedding planes (layers) of limestone.
The camera was again my trusty Samsung A23. I'd headed across to Oxford for the day; I was lucky with the weather, so the journey was really enjoyable. It also gave me the chance to admire the fossils in the platforms at Paddington Station, which is always a bonus.
