They say that confession is good for the soul.  OK, here goes:  I used to watch Primeval when it was on (and throw virtual popcorn at the screen!), and I will also confess that when I came across a copy of Shadow of the Jaguar in a second-hand bookshop I handed over the required coin.

What reminded me about it was that yesterday, I was sorting out some photos to back up onto a Famous Photo-Sharing Website, and I came across this.  I was at the NHM shortly after I'd read the book, and I promptly took this photo.  The beast in the photo and in the book is Thylacosmilus, a sabre-toothed marsupial that looked very much like the more famous Smilodon, the sabre-toothed cat - a classic example of convergent evolution.

Coming across the photo again did bring a smile to my face.

I encountered something big and feline a little bit closer to home earlier this year -
